2017 - AIA National Justice Facilities Review
The new University of Washington campus police serves nearly 68,000 students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
The 30,000-square-foot facility houses offices, dispatch operations, a community meeting/training room, locker rooms, holding rooms, K-9 and bike patrol, and storage space on two upper levels and a basement. The design included a welcoming and transparent main entrance with an adjacent multi-use meeting space that facilitates community engagement and mentoring.
The building is sited in a prominent location that helps improve visibility and vehicular access to main arterials while facilitating community engagement and reinforcing campus-wide safety. This project enables the university to stay competitive in attracting the best students by increasing the perception of safety, a powerful factor for students and parents during the selection process.
“An elegant, highly visible law enforcement building that is well scaled to the community. The massing strategy is very successful at breaking down the building scale and expressing the building program elements.”
